Well, it has been a week since I have blogged as I had to go and speak in Winston Salem for two days. Plus, this being the holiday season, one can fall behind and quickly when it comes to trying to get work done along with everything else pertaining to the holiday season.

This is something I felt was important to blog about. Recently, an incident occurred at the exclusive private school Miss Porters located in Hartford, Connecticut. This is not just any ordinary school, this school has produced the likes of Gloria Vanderbilt, Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onasis and her sister Lee Bouvier. Once one finishes this school, they are guaranteed a first class ticket into the ivy league schools. A stellar reputation with some of the wealthiest families in this nation who send their daughters to this school for a first rate education. Recently, they have gotten quite the education.

One student, Tatum Bass was one that made good grades, was elected into student government and involved in sports. A girl everyone liked and appreciated. However, she made one small mistake. A mistake that she has been paying for with her mental health. She made a suggestion that the school hold its prom with other schools nearby. A small suggestion but one that spurned her peers on their heels and that turned on her within the bat of an eye. How can a small suggestion bring on so much cruelty?

A group of girls known as “Oprichniki” decided it was time to make Tatum’s life unbearable. Oprichniki is a Russian attack squad formed during the 16th century to attack and torture others. This group began to call Tatum retarded because she has attention deficit disorder (ADD). Their venom spread throughout classes, the dorms and onto the internet on face book. Lets not forget the cell phones and text messages. At a school dance, Tatum was humiliated in a cruel manner in front of hundreds who were involved. Tatum was suffering severe emotional stress and anxiety and two doctors told her to take a two month break away from the school. What did her tormenters do? They put up a “For Rent” sign on her bed. Her parents have filed a lawsuit with the school.

We tend to believe that these girls who come from such affluent backgrounds would have good social graces and would rise above this abuse. That is so far from the truth. Whether someone is poor, rich or middle class, they are not immune to this problem. It happens everywhere. What boggles my mind is that the school is allowing a clique by the name of “Oprichniki” to even exist without some form of punishment. Why are these girls not held accountable for their cruel behavior? True, their parents are rich and can buy anything. However, should they be excused for this behavior? Shouldn’t they be held accountable? Laws are made to protect everyone and this young lady deserves some compensation. Please, do not feed into this. Write Miss Porters and let them know what you think about this. I know I will. They may be wealthy but laws still exist. These girls need to be held accountable and I hope the Bass family takes them all straight to the bank.
